Anewbornissoftandtender,
Acrone,gnarledandstiff.
Plantsandanimals,inlife,aresuppleandsucculent;
Indeath,witheredanddry.
Sosoftnessandtendernessareattributesoflife,
Hardnessandstiffness,attributesofdeath.
Justasasaplesstreewillsplitanddecay
Soaninflexibleforcewillmeetdefeat;
Thehardandmightyliebeneaththeground
Whilethetenderandweakdanceonthebreezeabove.
